Stumptown AC signs partnership with Marco Etcheverry's Academy as Youth Soccer Training Affiliate and Local Sponsor

Charlotte Area’s Newest Soccer Academy, Located in Matthews, Will Train Youth Players Aged 6-15 Under International and Major League Soccer Star’s Guidance

Stumptown AC of the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) has signed an agreement with the Marco Etcheverry Soccer Academy/Charlotte Queen Academy to be a youth soccer training affiliate to the team for the 2021 NISA spring season.

The agreement between Stumptown and Marco Etcheverry Academy also will give added exposure to this new local soccer academy through innovative events, as well as at Stumptown home matches at the Matthews Sportsplex Stadium and other events or appearances involving the team.

“Marco’s love for the game of soccer and his desire to pass along that love and his knowledge and skills to the next generation of players has always been a passion of his for as long as I have known him,” says Stumptown President Fred Matthes. “I’ve gratefully called him a friend since 1995 when we began with the D.C. United organization.  We are thrilled to be affiliated with Marco’s new Academy and look forward to a long partnership that will benefit the youth of the Charlotte region as they also learn to love the beautiful game.”

Marco Etcheverry’s attachment to the Academy is the coming together of his love for the game of futbol/soccer from his earliest days growing up in Bolivia and learning the game at the prestigious, world renowned Tahuichi Academy in Santa Cruz. From there he enjoyed a 20-year playing career at the club level in Bolivia, Chile, Spain, Colombia and Ecuador. In the U.S, he played for Major League Soccer’s D.C. United where he won three championships and was named league MVP in 1998.  His D.C. United teams also won five other international and domestic titles. Marco was named to the MLS Best XI four times in his career and has been named to the 25 Greatest of All-time in MLS history.

Etcheverry also played for his national team of Bolivia with 71 caps and an appearance in the 1994 World Cup in the U.S.

The Marco Etcheverry Academy will begin tryouts and training for all interested players, both boys and girls, from ages 6 -15 this May at Matthews Sportsplex.
