Stumptown Eyes Season Sweep of NAFC Saturday Night

MATTHEWS, NC – Coming off a six -point road trip, Stumptown AC returns to action Saturday night at the Matthews Sportsplex when it hosts New Amsterdam FC in NISA league action. Stumptown supporters will welcome home their squad following a huge road victory last week, snapping league-leading Detroit City FC’s 51-week unbeaten streak.

Stumptown and NAFC last met in Hempstead, NY just nine days ago, with a late Yuki Shibata goal lifting the blue and white to a 2-1 win. Shibata came off the bench at New Amsterdam in the 60th minute, and scored what proved to be the game winner with an amazing solo effort. His run on ball started down the left side of the field just over midfield, beating four defenders on a 40-yard streak before slotting the ball under New Amsterdam goalie Laurence Girard.

Robert Hines opened the scoring in just the 6th minute of the September 15th match against NAFC, heading home a beautiful set piece played over a high back line. New Amsterdam drew even, converting a penalty kick in the 20th minute, with Chris Bermudez finding his way onto the score sheet.

With three games in 8 days last week, Stumptown AC head coach Rod Underwood went to his bench to find the difference against New Amsterdam, using a total of five changes in the second half. Shibata earned Man of the Match honors for his game-winner, as both he and Hines scored their first professional goals in the win.

Stumptown rode the momentum from the late winner to Detroit, pulling off what most would consider an upset of Detroit City FC 1-0 over the weekend. Stumptown looked the better of the two teams, scoring a beautiful team goal to earn the victory. Deshawon Nembhard scored the full volley highlight goal, with Rhys Williams playing the set-up role once again.

NAFC earned a 2-1 victory over Maryland Bobcats last weekend, as both teams come into the clash in Matthews on the heels of three points, but only Stumptown has the chance to sweep the season series tomorrow night.
