MATTHEWS, NC – Just five weeks ago, Stumptown AC took to the road for a pair of matches in New York and Michigan, completing a six-point swing and kicking off the league’s longest active unbeaten streak – currently at six matches. The second of those matches was on the road at Detroit City FC, handing the defending champion and league leading team their only loss in the last 13 months.
Saturday night, at the Matthews SportsPlex, the two teams will clash once again in a rematch that the entire league has circled on their calendars. DCFC has defeated every team in NISA, minus Stumptown AC, who has played Le Rouge particularly tough this year. In June, during the CoVID-shortened return to play season, Stumptown played DCFC to a scoreless draw in Hamtramck, before taking all three points at Keyworth Stadium in September.
The game-winner in September came from central defender Deshawon Nembhart, who finished off a gorgeous team goal. The assist came from set-up man Rhys Williams on a well-executed cross to the back post. Nembhart took the feed on the full volley, bashing it home in the 80th minute for the win.
Stumptown went on to win their next match, before three consecutive ties over the last few weeks. The unbeaten run since mid-September has allowed the Stumps to stay competitive in a tightly grouped middle of the table in NISA. DCFC has continued to pace the league, sitting 12 points clear second place atop the table with 32 points. In a battle for the next spot is Cal United (20 points), LA Force (19), Michigan Stars (19), Stumptown (18) and New Amsterdam FC (17).
