MATTHEWS, NC - Stumptown AC had its six-game unbeaten streak snapped by league-leading Detroit City FC this evening, suffering a 3-0 loss at the Matthews SportsPlex.
After a scoreless first half, DCFC took a 1-0 lead on a second rush from a corner kick. The eventual curling shot found the back of the net off the foot of Le Rouge’s Pato Batello in the 52nd minute.
Just six minutes later Detroit City doubled their advantage on a back post finish in traffic. Matt Lewis found the net and score sheet with a left footed half volley into the side netting.
A pair of second half substitutions followed suit for the Stumps, with coach Rod Underwood going to Agwie Chunga and Bay Kurtz for fresh legs in the attack.
The final 15 minutes of play Stumptown AC pushed into the offensive third on a number of rushes, but was unable to beat the Detroit City defense and goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher.
In the 88th minute, Detroit City added a final goal off the crossbar from Maxi Rodriguez. The trio of goals against for Stumptown is the first time since the season opener that the Stumps have surrendered three goals.
Of note, today’s result is the first time DCFC has beaten Stumptown, also marking the first time it has found the back of the net in the rivalry. Stumptown drops to 4-6-4 with the loss while Detroit City improves to 11-2-1 on the year.
With one month to play in the 2021 NISA Fall season, DCFC sits in the driver’s seat for a second consecutive league championship. With another victory next week, or losses by LA Force and Cal United, Detroit City can lock up the regular season single table format crown.
