MATTHEWS, NC – This Saturday night at the Matthews SportsPlex the two sides from Stumptown AC and San Diego 1904 FC will take the pitch to wrap up their season series following a scoreless draw and a cross-country trip this week. While the most recent meeting of the two teams ended in a 0-0 tie, the Stumps and 1904 are a tale of two stories when looking at the last month.
After a run of three straight victories, Stumptown AC has not registered a three-point result in the last month, with a record of 0-4-1 in the last five. During that same span, 1904 has fallen into last place in the NISA Fall 2021 standings, losing four of five matches and earning just a single point last weekend against Stumptown.
The final minutes of the game last week were marred by a red card ejection for 1904, with a player being sent off for making a statement of a racist nature. Not only was that player sent off the field by the referee, but they were quickly and subsequently terminated by 1904. In a sign of both NISA and the club’s commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion, the issue was addressed head on by 1904 and NISA representatives and this Saturday evening’s starting line-ups for Stumptown and San Diego will be dressed in matching shirts that read “Say No to Racism” in a sign of player unity.
Once the first whistle blows, a sense of unity will fall to the background, while both teams look to begin the final month of the season registering a victory. The Stumps will be looking to return to a .500 record at home on the year, while San Diego 1904 FC is still seeking a first victory away from Southern California this season.
On Saturday evening, Stumptown AC will welcome members of the Matthews Chamber of Commerce community and the local soccer community, including those from the Charlotte Soccer Academy, where the team has trained this season, and teams competing in the Carolina Champions League action on site that day.
