Stumps Battle to 1-1 Deadlock Vs. 1904 FC

MATTHEWS, NC - Stumptown AC took the pitch at the Matthews SportsPlex this evening to play host to San Diego 1904 FC in a replay of last weekend’s matchup. Following a scoreless draw last week, the two teams settled for a 1-1 result this evening.

In the 11th minute of play San Diego 1904 FC scored the first goal of the game off the foot of Gerardo Lopez Delgadillo. After a highlight reel save by Stumptown AC goalkeeper Kevin Gonzalez gave 1904 the first corner of the match, San Diego kept play in front of the Stumptown goal to set up the score. Lopez Delgadillo tallied the opener on a half volley laser to the left side of the goal to take a 1-0 lead.

In the 22nd minute Stumptown winger Rhys Williams rang the right post on a beautiful bid. Playing on the left side, Williams cut back across the defense and curled a right-footed strike that beat 1904 keeper Alfredo Cortez completely, but unfortunately not the frame.

Just five minutes later, Stumptown AC grabbed the equalizer off the foot of striker Travis Ward. Once again Williams broke into space, squaring a pass back to Ward at the top of the box, where he calmly smashed home a low shot to the right of Cortez’s outstretched arms to draw even 1-1.

On a cold and windy evening in North Carolina, it seemed as thought both sides took a few minutes to gain their rhythm after the break. The first scoring chance of the second stanza came once again off the left wing from Williams for the Stumps.

In the 60th minute a beautiful combination of short passes in traffic led to a cheeky bid from Isma Longo of Stumptown AC. The culmination of half a dozen quick one-touch passes, Longo’s instep chip nearly bested Cortez if not for a back-pedaling dive and fingertip deflection over the goal.

The final third of the game saw both teams pushing forward for a game winner, but as time ticked off the clock at the SportsPlex neither side was able to find the three points, settling for a 1-1 draw.

Stumptown AC heads on the road one final time for 2021 to face off against Chicago House next Saturday before wrapping the Fall NISA season on November 20th at home against Chattanooga FC at 7pm. To watch either game visit and to purchase tickets for the season finale please go to
