Jalen Brown joins Stumptown Athletic as a top outside midfielder, coming to the Charlotte area from a contract with the NPSL New York Cosmos. Jalen is from Indianapolis, and received a scholarship to play for Xavier University, where he led the team in goals and ranked second with 15 points, 46 shots and 20 shots on goal. In 2017, he was selected 38th overall in the MLS SuperDraft by the New York City Football Club, and then played with the USL Rochester Rhinos.
When did you start playing soccer?
I started playing when I was four. I grew up in Indianapolis, and my parents started me on a team when I was young. I’ve played ever since, including with the Hoosier Futbol Club, Carmel Football Club and Indiana Fire, the Chicago Fire’s youth soccer club. By the time I was in high school, I knew I wanted to be a pro soccer player.
Playing also runs in my family – my younger sister Ryanne currently plays soccer at Wake Forest.
When did your soccer career take off?
I got a scholarship to play soccer at Xavier University, where I led my team in goals and received seven Big East Conference honors. When I was a freshman, I received two rookie honors, then was selected in 2014 for the Big East All-Tournament Team. I also received four weekly honors over my junior and senior seasons. After I graduated with a liberal arts degree, I went to the MLS Player Combine, and the New York City FC selected me in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft. From there, I played for the USL Rochester Rhinos, then the NPSL New York Cosmos.
Do you have a coach or teammate who inspired you?
Coach Mario from the Hoosier Futbol Club inspired a lot of the love and passion I have for the game today.
Who’s your favorite pro player?
Eden Hazard because he’s quick, technical, and fearless.
When people talk about you as a player, what do you hope they say?
I hope they say, “He’s quick, crafty, a great teammate, and does whatever it takes to win.”
What should fans know about you?
I’m excited to be a part of this new club. I’m unselfish, committed, hardworking and will do whatever it takes to win. I want to make a lot of memories, meet new people, and of course, play at the highest level possible.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to run and listen to music. I also really like to read, which may surprise some people!
