Welcome centerback Sergio Campbell as he brings his experience from both his home country and his time in the United States to Stumptown Athletic. From winning the Caribbean Cup in both 2010 and 2017 to being the 19th pick in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft and even more, he’s a great addition to our team. It runs in the family – his uncle was also a pro soccer player.
I started playing when I was really young, but it was nothing serious. Around the age of seven, I started getting proper coaching and playing in organized games. Everyone in my family is good in sports, especially soccer and cricket. Plus, I lived next to a soccer field and my uncle, Rodolph Austin, was a pro soccer player so I was always playing with him.
I started playing for Clarendon College High School and the Portmore United U17 team when I was younger, then I played for the Jamaican U15, U17, U20 and senior national teams. I was actually the captain of the U20 team. When I was on the senior national team, we won the Caribbean Championship by beating Guyana and Grenada.
After playing with them I was recruited to play at the University of Central Arkansas, but I transferred to the University of Connecticut, where I started in every game for my three years there. I’m proud of the honors I received as a Husky, including Conference Defensive Player of the week as a junior and senior, then Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. I was also named to the All-Conference First Team as a junior and senior.
In 2015, the Columbus Crew selected me as the 19th pick in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft. A year later, I played for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and the team won the championship. The following year I began playing with the Rochester Rhinos and we won another championship.
My uncle Rodolph Austin, who is an amazing pro soccer player. I watched his team and trained with him growing up. I wanted to be like him and saw the strides he took to accomplish his dreams, so I wanted to do the same. I knew I could do it and my uncle was a huge motivation in my soccer career.
Other than my uncle, I grew up watching Zinedine Zidane. His ball control is insane along with how he reads the game. He’s a player who makes everyone better and you can really learn from him.
If I wasn’t playing soccer I would want to be in law enforcement, or in some type of government job. I’ve always had a passion for police work and actually took the test to become an officer a few months ago. Sadly, I missed it by one point, but everything happens for a reason and now I’m here. I’m excited to see where this team goes!
I really enjoy reading, watching soccer clips, or playing games outside of soccer. I enjoy hanging out with my friends and family whenever I get the chance. I’m a pretty relaxed guy and just like taking everything day by day.
